Door County Wisconsin

The Door County Peninsula has over 300 miles of scenic shoreline on the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. We have long been considered the premier tourist destination in Wisconsin, many preferring the peace and tranquility offered by the Door County area to the hustle and bustle of places like Lake Geneva and Wisconsin Dells.

Door County offers visitors many exciting things to do. We have all manner of outdoor activities including water-based recreation such as swimming, sailing and kayak tours.

Washington Island is a short ferry ride across from Gills Rock, a great place to enjoy the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan.

Where else in Wisconsin can you find five state parks, ten lighthouses and more than a dozen county parks? For those of you looking for the comforts afforded by a big city vacation, we have some of the finest restaurants and dining experiences in WI. And don't forget the tradition of the Wisconsin fish boil - we'll leave it to you to figure that one out!

We're biased of course, so for us, the most exciting thing to do in Door County is to spend a few days touring art galleries, wineries and cafe/restaurants. There's an enormous art community in Door County, visual, performing and culinary arts come together in this small Peninsula of northern Wisc. (Visit our own art gallery at the Outpost!)

Plan your trip to WI and don't forget us at the Outpost. Here are a few recommendations for accommodation and dining and things to do

We also offer our own visitors to the Outpost a range of activities to keep you occupied, shopping, dining, a fine art gallery, wine tasting, kayak tours, concerts and live music events, or just sit out on the deck and enjoy the sun!

Things to do in Door County

Things to do in Door County - accommodation.

Church Hill Inn - One of our favorite places to stay in Door County is "The Church Hill Inn" located in Sister Bay. The facility is run by a fellow Brit - a cockney lad from the London area of England. Anyone passing Church Hill's is sure to see the black London taxi cab in the parking lot, a real souvenir from blighty!

The rooms are excellent at Church Hills and the breakfast (included) is superb. The stay here is worth every penny. What's fun is that they operate an 'honor system' for purchasing drinks at the bar after hours. Help yourself to a drink and drop the money in a cash box! I haven't seen this in a hotel since I stayed in a country B&B in England 20 years ago. They have internet access, an outdoor pool, and all the amenities of home. Check them out at http://www.churchhillinn.com/

Lull-abi Inn - Ideally located in the heart of downtown Egg Harbor, the Lull-abi offers its guests comfortable and sensibly priced rooms with easy access to all the towns businesses and activities. The Lull-abi is a family owned/run business and guests are sure to enjoy meeting the colorful proprietors Bruce and Gail Hill.

The room I stayed in was clean and modern and spacious, and included coffee maker, microwave and fridge. A few feet away from the motel is the Village Cafe, a great spot to enjoy breakfast and lunch. Check out the Lull-abi next time you're looking for digs in DC, and if you decide to stay there, tell Bruce that Carl sent you! - http://www.lullabi-inn.com/

The Landing Resort - You might easily miss the Landing as you roll through Egg Harbor, it's nestled away in the trees right at the Southern tip of town. I spent a few weeks on and off at the Landing and enjoyed their comfortable 'suite' style rooms and kitchen amenities. This really is a nice location, quiet and very private with a large outdoor pool, tennis courts and basketball court. Check them out online here http://www.thelandingresort.com/ they're open year round with great off-season rates. Please tell them you were recommended by Carl at the Outpost in Egg Harbor!

The Shipwrecked Pub and Micro brewery - the fact that they have rooms at the Shipwrecked has to be one of Egg Harbors best kept secrets! - Well, they do have rooms, 8 I believe, and they are great! I've stayed in at least 5 of the rooms during business visits to town and every stay was comfortable and enjoyable. The rooms are recently refurbished and really nicely appointed. There are water views available for a few extra dollars. Rates are extremely reasonable, and don't worry about staying above a bar, it was always quiet when I stayed there! The staff at the Shipwrecked are great too - Joey the bar manager, Judy the bartender and the head chef are all a hoot! - tell them Carl from the Outpost sent you.... http://www.shipwreckedmicrobrew.com/

Things to do in Door County - food and dining.

Well don't forget that the Outpost is really the best place for food in DC, but if you must stray, then checkout the following :)

The Mission Grille in Sister Bay - we've eaten there a few times now and it has always been first rate. This is fine dining at its finest, so expect to pay just a little more, but still expect very good value for money. Their wine list is one of the best I've seen outside of Europe - a list of wines from around the world, including my favorite Barolo! http://www.missiongrille.com/

The English Inn - Located just north of Fish Creek, the English Inn has that great 'British Pub' feel, only with a little more refinement that comes with their 'fine dining' label. Dark mahogany paneling, burgundy leather seating, a well-stocked bar and excellent food. Their signature dish as far as I'm concerned is their incredible Beef Wellington. A medium rare tenderloin wrapped in filo pastry. Oddly enough it isn't on their menu, but it has always been on the special board the times that we've eaten there. www.theenglishinn.com

Alexander's - We've only eaten dinner at Alexander's the one time, actually on Thanksgiving 2008, and it was excellent. The restaurant offers a more contemporary dining experience than most you will find in Door County, with an eclectic and beautifully executed menu. Great service too - this aspect really sets it aside from the local competition. Prices are very reasonable. I'd love to see an expanded wine list the next time I visit! http://www.alexandersofdoorcounty.com/

JJ's La Puerta - located at the northern end of Sister Bay, JJ's has the reputation of being the number one spot in Door County for Mexican food. I think that's probably fair, though it is tex-mex and you won't be surprised by the menu in any way. That said, we've eaten there dozens of times and the food has always been consistently very good. Expect it to be busy, if not packed, in-season, but don't let that put you off. Their waitresses and bar staff are top banana's and will give you the best of service. http://www.jjswaterfront.com/JJSLaPuertaHome.htm They also have the 'Waterfront' restaurant next door to JJ's. It's rather odd in that their signage is very difficult to see. We'd eaten at JJ's many times before we spotted an ad in the paper for the Waterfront - we didn't even realize it was there! - Anyway, we haven't eaten at the Waterfront yet, but we did enjoy a cocktail there and the menu looks very upscale and imaginative. It's on our list!

Mojo Rosa's - Traditional mexican food at its best, I think. Having actually been to Mexico a couple times I do appreciate the difference between tex-mex and authentic home cooking. Mojo's offer a selection of each, all served-up in a unique and quite exciting way. Kim is the owner at Mojo's along with her Ma, the pair also own Villagio's and the Village Cafe. Mojo's offers casual/comfortable dining and are family friendly. They serve up American food too, have daily food/drink specials and are open late year-round. I highly recommend Mojo's for their Mexican dishes and great hospitality. http://www.mojorosas-doorcounty.com/ (Kim, call me about your website!!).

Casey's Inn Supper Club - These guy's know how to do barbecue! A real first class meat feast and all smoked on-site. The best smoked sausage I've ever tasted! Stop in and say hello to Regan and Matt, tell them Carl and Susan from the Outpost sent you! 7855 Egg Harbor Rd, Egg Harbor, WI 54209
(920) 868-3038

Northern Grill & Pizza - always a fun place to stop off after work and enjoy a cocktail and dinner. Eric the head bartender is always friendly and helpful, and Lisa the owner is great too. The food is great, one of the few places around where you can get a good steak, a great pizza or even Wisconsin sausage and kraut!
321 Country Walk Dr.
920-854-9590

Husby's and Sister Bay Bowl - we like both of these places, both serving good food and cocktails (are you starting to see a pattern forming here?).....These are located opposite each other on the hill in Sister Bay, just a block down from the Mission Grille and a mile north of JJ's.
